The Animal Days Out Activity Club children had some memorable and fun moments over the summer and autumn periods in our own garden space within the grounds of Hurst Community Centre. Unfortunately the future of the garden is now in the balance. As some of you may be aware, the London Borough of Bexley are in the process of out-sourcing the management of many of the community centres, some libraries and other council run centres right across the borough. One of those community centres currently going through the tender process is Hurst Community Centre. For now the current management team are still running the centre and fully supporting Animal Days Out and many other community organisations with providing their facilities for use. The new management team are expected to be announced in July 2013. This of course makes it very difficult for ADO to plan and invest further into the garden...

Find A Day Out It has always been in our interest to encourage the public to find animal, wildlife and nature days out in the UK. We have over the last three years supported wildlife parks, zoos, public aquariums, animal farms and many more by promoting their venues, advertising their events, adding their vouchers and raising the visibility of some of the great conservation work they do both at home and abroad. At our peak we were experiencing over a million hits on our website per month as the general public used our service to find animal, wildlife and nature family days out and events in their region using our comprehensive search facility. Time Intensive To continue this great public service required large amounts of both time and resource to update and add the data to our database. It required regular contact with the animal parks to ensure that events...

At The Beginning - Looking Down the 'Garden'
It was a beautiful sunny and warm day to start the first work of the year on the land at Hurst Community Centre, designated as the Animal Days Out Activity Club Garden. Not bad considering it was the first day of March! The Garden looking down from the top end (above), Brambles Everywhere!! (right) To bring you all up to date, work started on the garden late last year to clear the first stage of the area. After hacking back a 4m by 2m area of solid and very prickly bramble bushes, stinging nettles and weeds, the ADO team decided to leave the clearing over winter in the hope that the frosts would break down the heavy soil ready for some serious planning in 2012. On returning to the area, the surface was looking good. It was now time to turn the soil over and remove any bramble or perennial weed roots...

Seedlings Tray
We are pleased to announce that the Grow and Learn Starter Packs are under way and growing well. The aim is to get them ready for Easter and into the gardens after the Easter school half-term holidays. Dig This Nursery have been working hard preparing the trays and under warm greenhouse conditions the seeds are already bursting into life as seedlings. It will not be long before these seedlings become plump little plug plants. Of course as Dig This Nursery are Soil Association certified, all these seeds are being grown using pure organic materials with no chemical additives or treatments. Keep an eye on the blog and we will report on how the seedlings are getting on.   We also have fantastic news that the Happy Seeds range has been given the rubber stamp of approval from DEFRA for licensed sales in the UK, conforming with British and EU regulations. The team have been...

The last few daddy long legs have managed to bumble their way in to the house and are now flapping against a tall standard lamp in the corner of the living room. Like a man trapped in a prison cell, they can't seem to break free from the glow of the lamp as they fly into the lampshade time after time. It's like watching a plane crash land as it bumps into the ground and then lifts up a bit, hovering for a few feet before hitting the deck again. I had left the front door open as I carried out my ritual of emptying the day's re-cycling into the outside re-cycling bins and without hesitation the hallway light had attracted the bungling bugs as though a sign with 'Utopia' had welcomed them in. It's amazing how many people are scared of these harmless creatures. Some people react with horror as though...

Butterfly
As we start to move into the summer months, the butterfly becomes a common visitor to our parks and gardens. Depending on the species of butterfly, certain plants and shrubs become a magnet for these beautiful insects to land and drink nectar from. The life-cycle of a butterfly is truly remarkable. Starting as a tiny egg, this hatches into a long creepy-crawly caterpillar with sometimes bizarre hairy and brightly coloured skin. The next stage transforms it again into becoming a crusty dull chrysalis, almost suspended in animation. Finally after hatching, a beautiful delicate adult butterfly emerges bringing joy to many people who love to see them fluttering in the warm sun. It is common belief that butterflies don't live very long. This of course depends on the species of butterfly as some can last a number of weeks, whilst others can last up to one year. There are 58 species of...

Volunteers WantedWe Want You As A New Recruit

We want you as a new recruit!

If you would love to work with animals or work in the wonderful environment of wildlife and nature, we are looking for some keen people to help out from time to time as a volunteer. We are always on the look out for like-minded individuals to help out at Animal Days Out C.I.C. We would love to have a large team of seasoned professionals within our ranks, but the reality of our situation is that we simply have to rely on the goodwill, generosity and kindness of people as passionate about animals, wildlife and nature as we are.

Opportunities

As we provide our animal encounters in the community, we often require additional volunteers to help out with various events and encounters. We know that 2013 will be a very busy year for the team and we would welcome like-minded individuals who would like to get involved and help out from time to time. Our work is public facing and we often work with children, young people, disadvantaged people and the disabled, therefore there are a number of opportunities for people with experience in these areas or willing to learn. We of course work with a whole range of live animals, all creatures great and small!

Do You Fit The Bill?

We are looking for enthusastic people who love animals, wildlife and nature and can work in a team in a public facing role. This is an opportunity to be involved with a dynamic community company where by you will have the opportunity to work in a number of different areas including animal encounters, events and activity days.

We can not offer you fame and fortune, but we can offer you a chance to be involved in something that's both enjoyable to you and to the people and organisations that we provide a service to.

Future Prospects?

We are actively looking at a number of funding streams for projects and initiatives that may lead to paid roles in the future. Our belief as a community company is to build a business where by we can provide employment opportunities to local people with the services we can provide.  Becoming a volunteer can often be a good career move! You may start as a volunteer, but in time the role could develop and could turn into a permanent position.

How Do i Sign Up?

To find out more about how to become an Animal Days Out volunteer and to speak to a member of our team in confidence, you can contact us using the details below. All we require from you is to complete a Volunteer Form and to attend a ½ day training and induction day before volunteering.

Become a part of our team! Its great fun, an opportunity to meet a whole range of people and work at something you really enjoy doing.
